SanegeneBio has successfully raised $110 million (approximately ₩157 billion) in its Series B funding round. This investment reflects global investors' recognition of the innovative extra-hepatic tissue-targeted RNAi (RNA interference) therapeutics being developed by SanegeneBio. While existing RNAi therapeutics have primarily focused on the liver, SanegeneBio has significantly expanded their application by developing a proprietary delivery system capable of reaching various organs, including the lungs, heart, kidneys, and brain. RNAi therapeutics offer fundamental therapeutic effects by suppressing the expression of specific genes that cause diseases. They also boast high safety as they can achieve therapeutic outcomes without gene editing. SanegeneBio is currently building a pipeline targeting conditions such as pulmonary fibrosis, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease, and has secured significant results in Phase 1-2 clinical trials. In particular, with limited existing treatment options for pulmonary fibrosis, SanegeneBio's RNAi therapeutics are expected to provide a breakthrough. The newly secured funds will be used to expand clinical trials, establish production facilities, and strengthen global partnerships. SanegeneBio plans to announce Phase 2 clinical results for 2-3 indications by 2026 and is also in discussions for licensing-out (L/O) agreements with global pharmaceutical companies. RNAi therapeutics are establishing themselves as one of the three major pillars of next-generation biopharmaceuticals, alongside mRNA vaccines and gene therapies, and SanegeneBio is recognized as possessing the most advanced technology in this field among Korean companies.
